What Is Pad Printing?

Pad printing (tampo printing) is an indirect offset printing process. A silicone pad picks up ink from an engraved plate (the cliché) and transfers it directly onto the product surface.

  1. Your artwork is etched into a steel or polymer cliché plate.
  2. A silicone pad presses onto the cliché and picks up the ink.
  3. The pad deforms to conform to the product surface and releases the ink precisely.

The silicone pad's ability to flex is the defining feature. It can reach convex shoulders, concave bases, narrow necks, and any irregular geometry that a rigid screen printing frame cannot access.

Ink Systems for Glass Pad Printing

UV-Curable Inks

Cured instantly with UV light. High gloss finish, good scratch resistance, fast production throughput. Widely used in cosmetic glass decoration.

Two-Component (2K) Inks

Epoxy-based inks with a hardener. Superior chemical resistance — suitable for alcohol-based fragrance, acid-containing serums, and humid retail environments.

Fired (Enamel) Inks

Applied to glass and cured in a kiln at high temperature. The ink fuses permanently with the glass surface. Used in premium production runs where longevity is non-negotiable.

Artwork Requirements

  • Vector format is mandatory. EPS or AI (PDF accepted). JPEG and PNG are not suitable.
  • Spot colour reference: Provide a Pantone (PMS) code. Each colour requires a separate cliché plate.
  • Minimum line weight: Lines thinner than 0.5 pt may be lost in plate etching.
  • Print area dimensions: Specify which surface and the maximum mm dimensions of the print field.
